ABOUT ADWAN
Association for Dalit Women’s Advancement of Nepal (ADWAN) is a human rights organization, supporting poor, Dalit, marginalized women, girls and children to strengthen with Rights, Education, Advocacy and Livelihood (REAL) for establishing, equitable society and sustainable peace. The organization works on the issues of unprivileged, vulnerable groups of rural areas which are not being addressed and implemented practically. In the deep rooted prevailing political, social, cultural discrimination of class, caste and gender, Dalit, a so called lower caste by social hierarchy are lagging behind in all faculties. Among Dalit, women are the most oppressed one. ADWAN was established in 1998 to work on the issues of Dalit and marginalized girls and women because they are victimized triply in the prevailing society – as a woman, Dalit as untouchable and the poorest of the poor. Vulnerability and hardship of life lead them to marginality. In a society where simply being able to write one’s name makes one “literate”, their literacy rate lies between 12 and 24%, compared to the national average of 64%. Due to deprivation of basic fulfillment, they are less able to bounce back in terms of economic access and control, decision making, and getting equal status in the society. It believes that women and girls are powerful potential agents of change which become a force to work incessantly in the enhancement of community and the society. Thus, ADWAN’s capacity strengthening activities spark the womenfolk to stand with self-esteem in equality and diversity. Read More …
